Art of All Places
Everybody meets at Place des Arts at some point. There is always a good reason to go: listening to music, dancing, gathering, protesting. A true home for the artistic spirit.
A significant portion of the city’s major festivals happens there: the mythical Montreal Jazz Festival, Montréal en Lumière, Just for Laughs, Les Francos, Festival International Nuits d’Afrique. The list goes on.
In a city recently affected by municipal regulations around noise and public gatherings, Place des Arts remains one of the main spaces for live entertainment in the Quartier des spectacles.
Street dancers can often be found practicing on the esplanade, especially outside the winter season. They set up their cyphers in different corners of the space, slightly away from the heavy traffic of Sainte-Catherine Street.
People also go to Place des Arts to protest. The place in town made for the greatest shows naturally becomes the perfect megaphone for social justice. You hear chants. You see groups of people walking in unison, almost like choreography.
Entertainment and justice may only be one note away from singing the same song.
